¹브두엘의 아들 요엘에게 내린 야훼의 말씀. The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.

²늙은이들은 들어라. 이 땅의 주민들은 모두 귀를 기울여라. 너희 세대에 이런 일이 있었느냐? 너희 조상 적에 이런 일이 있었느냐? Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?

³이 일을 너희의 자녀들에게 일러라. 자녀들은 또 그 자녀들에게 그 자녀들은 또 그 다음 세대에 이르게 하여라. Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.

⁴풀무치가 남긴 것은 메뚜기가 갉아먹고 메뚜기가 남긴 것은 누리가 썰어먹고 누리가 남긴 것은 황충이가 탕쳐 먹었다. That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller eaten.

⁵포도주에 취한 자들아, 깨어 일어나 울며 통곡하여라. 술이 다 떨어지게 되었다. Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

⁶수도 없이 많은 외국군이 내 나라에 쳐들어왔다. 그 이빨은 사자 이빨 같고 암사자의 송곳니 같은 것들이 For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.

⁷내 포도원을 짓밟고 내 무화과 동산을 찍어내는데 껍질들을 하얗게 벗겨버리는구나. He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.

⁸약혼자의 죽음을 슬퍼하는 처녀처럼 상복을 입고 통곡하여라. Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

⁹곡식도 포도주도 야훼의 성전에 드릴 것이 없어 야훼를 섬기는 사제들은 슬픔에 잠겼다. The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the LORD ; the priests, the LORD’s ministers, mourn.

¹⁰들판은 망그러지고 밭은 메말랐다. 곡식은 다 떨어졌고 포도주는 바닥이 드러났으며 올리브 기름은 말라버렸다. The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth.

¹¹기가 차느냐, 농부들아? 포도원을 가꾸던 자들아, 울어라. 밀이나 보리뿐이랴, 거두려던 곡식이 모조리 없어졌다. Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.

¹²포도덩굴은 마르고 무화과나무는 시들었다. 석류나무, 대추나무, 능금나무 할 것 없이 들판의 나무들은 모두 시들었다. 모든 사람에게서 기쁨은 사라졌다. The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.

¹³사제들아, 베옷을 걸치고 슬피 울어라. 제단에서 시중드는 자들아, 통곡하여라. 내 하느님께 시중드는 자들아, 와서 베옷을 걸치고 밤을 새워라. 너희 하느님의 전에 드릴 곡식도 포도주도 모두 떨어졌다. Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.

¹⁴단식을 선포하여라. 성회를 소집하여라. 장로들아, 전국민을 불러 너희 하느님 전에 모으고 야훼께 부르짖어라. Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD ,

¹⁵마침내 그 날이 오고야 말았구나. 야훼께서 거둥하실 날이 다가왔구나. 전능하신 하느님께서 마구 멸하실 날이 오고야 말았구나. Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

¹⁶음식은 볼 수도 없이 되지 않았느냐? 우리 하느님의 전에서 기쁨과 즐거움이 사라지지 않았느냐? Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea , joy and gladness from the house of our God?

¹⁷흙이 말라 그 속에서 씨앗은 죽고 곡식이 없어 창고는 비고 곳간은 무너졌다. The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered.

¹⁸목장이 없어져 가축들이 울부짖고 소떼들이 소란하다. 양떼라고 그 벌을 면할쏘냐? How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.

¹⁹야훼여, 내가 주께 부르짖습니다. 들판의 목장이 타버렸습니다. 벌판의 나무들도 모조리 타버렸습니다. O LORD , to thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.

²⁰물줄기들은 모두 마르고 들판의 목장도 모두 타버려 가축들이 벌판에서 주께 부르짖습니다. The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
