17잠언 · 개역개정
1마른 떡 한 조각만 있고도 화목하는 것이 제육이 집에 가득하고도 다투는 것보다 나으니라 Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.
2슬기로운 종은 부끄러운 짓을 하는 주인의 아들을 다스리겠고 또 형제들 중에서 유업을 나누어 얻으리라 A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
3도가니는 은을, 풀무는 금을 연단하거니와 여호와는 마음을 연단하시느니라 The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
4악을 행하는 자는 사악한 입술이 하는 말을 잘 듣고 거짓말을 하는 자는 악한 혀가 하는 말에 귀를 기울이느니라 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
5가난한 자를 조롱하는 자는 그를 지으신 주를 멸시하는 자요 사람의 재앙을 기뻐하는 자는 형벌을 면하지 못할 자니라 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
6손자는 노인의 면류관이요 아비는 자식의 영화니라 Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
7지나친 말을 하는 것도 미련한 자에게 합당하지 아니하거든 하물며 거짓말을 하는 것이 존귀한 자에게 합당하겠느냐 Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
8뇌물은 그 임자가 보기에 보석 같은즉 그가 어디로 향하든지 형통하게 하느니라 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
9허물을 덮어 주는 자는 사랑을 구하는 자요 그것을 거듭 말하는 자는 친한 벗을 이간하는 자니라 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
10한 마디 말로 총명한 자에게 충고하는 것이 매 백 대로 미련한 자를 때리는 것보다 더욱 깊이 박히느니라 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
11악한 자는 반역만 힘쓰나니 그러므로 그에게 잔인한 사자가 보냄을 받으리라 An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12차라리 새끼 빼앗긴 암곰을 만날지언정 미련한 일을 행하는 미련한 자를 만나지 말 것이니라 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
13누구든지 악으로 선을 갚으면 악이 그 집을 떠나지 아니하리라 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14다투는 시작은 둑에서 물이 새는 것 같은즉 싸움이 일어나기 전에 시비를 그칠 것이니라 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
15악인을 의롭다 하고 의인을 악하다 하는 이 두 사람은 다 여호와께 미움을 받느니라 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD .
16미련한 자는 무지하거늘 손에 값을 가지고 지혜를 사려 함은 어찜인고 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it ?
17친구는 사랑이 끊어지지 아니하고 형제는 위급한 때를 위하여 났느니라 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
18지혜 없는 자는 남의 손을 잡고 그의 이웃 앞에서 보증이 되느니라 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
19다툼을 좋아하는 자는 죄과를 좋아하는 자요 자기 문을 높이는 자는 파괴를 구하는 자니라 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
20마음이 굽은 자는 복을 얻지 못하고 혀가 패역한 자는 재앙에 빠지느니라 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
21미련한 자를 낳는 자는 근심을 당하나니 미련한 자의 아비는 낙이 없느니라 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
22마음의 즐거움은 양약이라도 심령의 근심은 뼈를 마르게 하느니라 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
23악인은 사람의 품에서 뇌물을 받고 재판을 굽게 하느니라 A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
24지혜는 명철한 자 앞에 있거늘 미련한 자는 눈을 땅 끝에 두느니라 Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
25미련한 아들은 그 아비의 근심이 되고 그 어미의 고통이 되느니라 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
26의인을 벌하는 것과 귀인을 정직하다고 때리는 것은 선하지 못하니라 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
27말을 아끼는 자는 지식이 있고 성품이 냉철한 자는 명철하니라 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
28미련한 자라도 잠잠하면 지혜로운 자로 여겨지고 그의 입술을 닫으면 슬기로운 자로 여겨지느니라 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
