사사기 1장은 여호수아가 죽은 뒤 이스라엘 지파들이 가나안 땅을 차지하려고 싸운 일을 지파별로 기록한다. 유다 지파는 여러 곳을 얻었고, 여러 지파는 가나안 사람을 다 쫓아내지 못했다.

가나안 정복이 끝나다

1여호수아가 죽은 뒤, 이스라엘 백성은 어느 지파가 가나안족을 치러 앞장서 올라갈 것인가를 야훼께 물었다. Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD , saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
2"유다 지파가 올라가거라. 내가 이제 이 땅을 그들의 손에 부친다." 이러한 야훼의 분부를 받고 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
3유다 지파는 동기인 시므온 지파에게 제안하였다. "우리에게 몫으로 돌아온 지방으로 너희도 함께 올라가 가나안 사람들을 치자. 그리하면 우리도 너희에게 몫으로 돌아간 지방으로 함께 진군하리라." 이리하여 시므온 지파도 함께 진군하게 되었다. And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.
4유다 지파가 쳐 올라가는데, 야훼께서 가나안족과 브리즈족을 그들의 손에 부쳐주셨으므로 베젝에서 일만 명이나 무찔렀다. And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
5그 곳 베젝에서 그들은 아도니베젝과 접전하여 가나안족과 브리즈족을 무찔렀던 것이다. And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6도망치는 아도니베젝을 뒤쫓아가서 사로잡아 그의 엄지손가락과 엄지발가락을 자르자, But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
7아도니베젝이 이렇게 탄식하였다. "내가 엄지손가락과 엄지발가락을 자르고 내 상 밑에서 부스러기를 주워 먹게 한 왕이 칠십 명이나 되더니, 하느님께서 내가 한 대로 나에게 갚으시는구나." 그는 예루살렘으로 끌려가 거기에서 죽었다. And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
8유다 자손은 예루살렘을 쳐서 칼로 무찔러 점령하고는 그 성에 불을 놓았다. Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
9그리고 나서 유다 자손은 산악 지대와 네겝 지방과 야산 지대로 내려가 거기에 사는 가나안족을 쳤다. And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
10다시 유다 지파는 가나안족이 사는 헤브론으로 진군하였는데, 헤브론은 일찍이 키럇아르바라고 불리던 곳이었다. 거기에서 그들은 세새와 아히만과 달매를 무찔렀다. And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
11그들은 다시 드빌 주민을 치러 갔는데, 드빌은 일찍이 키럇세벨이라고 불리던 곳이었다. And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher:
12거기에서 갈렙은 키럇세벨을 점령하는 사람에게 자기의 딸 악사를 아내로 주겠다고 했다. And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
13갈렙의 동생 크나즈의 아들인 오드니엘이 그 곳을 점령하고 악사를 아내로 맞아 갈렙의 사위가 되었다. And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
14악사가 시집으로 떠날 때가 되어 오드니엘은 악사를 시켜 장인에게서 땅을 얻으려고 하였다. 악사가 나귀에서 내리는 것을 보고 갈렙은 왜 그러느냐고 물었다. And it came to pass, when she came to him , that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?
15"저를 네겝 지방으로 시집 보내시면서 아무 선물도 주시지 않겠습니까?" 그러면서 악사가 샘을 달라고 하자 갈렙은 윗샘 아랫샘을 주었다. And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.
16모세의 장인 호밥은 켄 사람이었는데, 그는 유다 자손들과 함께 종려나무 도시로부터 올라와 아랏 남방에 있는 유다 사막에 이르러 아말렉족과 어울려 살았다. And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
17유다 지파는 동기인 시므온 지파와 함께 진군하여 스밧에 자리잡고 사는 가나안족을 무찌르고 전멸시켰다. 그래서 그 도시의 이름을 호르마라 부르게 되었다. And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
18그러나 유다 지파는 가자와 그 일대, 아스클론과 그 일대, 에크론과 그 일대는 차지하지 못하였다. Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.
19야훼께서 함께 하시어 유다 지파는 산악 지대를 차지하였다. 그러나 평지에 자리잡은 사람들은 아직 몰아내지 못했는데, 그들에게 철병거가 있기 때문이었다. And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20모세의 지시대로 헤브론은 갈렙이 차지하였다. 갈렙은 거기에서 아낙의 세 아들을 몰아냈다. And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.
21베냐민 자손은 예루살렘에 자리잡은 여부스족을 몰아내지 못하였다. 그래서 여부스족이 베냐민 자손과 함께 이날까지 예루살렘에 사는 것이다. And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
22요셉 가문이 베델을 치러 올라갈 때에도 야훼께서 함께 하셨다. And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el: and the LORD was with them.
23일찍이 루즈라 불리던 베델 성을 요셉 가문이 정탐하게 되었다. And the house of Joseph sent to descry Beth-el. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)
24정탐꾼들은 그 성에서 나오는 사람을 붙들고 성으로 들어가는 길이 어디냐고 물으면서 길만 알려준다면 은혜를 잊지 않겠다고 약속하였다. And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.
25그 사람은 정탐꾼들에게 성으로 들어가는 길을 알려주었다. 그래서 그 성을 칼로 무찌르면서도 그 사람과 그의 온 일가는 죽이지 않았다. And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
26그 사람은 헷족이 사는 지방으로 가서 한 성을 세우고 그 이름을 루즈라 하였는데 이날까지도 그 이름으로 불리고 있다. And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.
27므나쎄 지파는 벳스안과 거기 딸린 촌락들, 다아낙과 거기 딸린 촌락들을 차지하지 못하였다. 또 도르와 거기 딸린 촌락의 주민, 이블르암과 거기 딸린 촌락의 주민, 므기또와 거기 딸린 촌락의 주민도 몰아내지 못하여 그 땅에 온 가나안족이 그대로 살고 있었다. Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
28그러나 이스라엘은 강력해지면서 가나안족을 아주 몰아내지 않고 부역을 시켰다. And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
29에브라임 지파는 게젤에 자리잡고 사는 가나안족을 몰아내지 못하였다. 그래서 그 가나안족이 그들과 섞여 살게 되었다. Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
30즈불룬은 키트론 주민과 나할롤 주민을 몰아내지 못하였다. 그래서 그 가나안족을 섞여 살게 하다가 부역을 시키게 되었다. Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
31아셀 지파는 아꼬와 시돈 주민을 몰아내지 못하였다. 또 아흘랍, 악집, 헬바, 아빅, 르홉도 차지하지 못하였다. Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:
32그래서 아셀 지파는 그 땅 주민인 가나안족과 섞여 살았다. 그들을 몰아내지 못했기 때문이었다. But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.
33납달리 지파는 벳세메스 주민과 벳아낫 주민을 몰아내지 못하였다. 그래서 그들은 그 땅 주민인 가나안족과 섞여서 살았다. 그러다가 벳세메스와 벳아낫 주민에게 부역을 시키게 되었다. Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries unto them.
34단 지파는 아모리족에게 밀려 산악 지대로 쫓겨 들어가 평지에는 내려올 엄두도 내지 못하게 되었다. And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:
35아모리족은 헤레스 산과 아얄론과 사알빔에 그대로 살았으나 마침내 요셉 가문에게 눌려 부역을 살게 되었다. But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.
36에돔족의 한 쪽 경계선은 아크라삠 비탈에서 시작하여 셀라로 해서 위쪽으로 뻗쳐 있었다. And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
