출애굽기 1장은 애굽에서 크게 번성한 이스라엘 자손을 요셉을 알지 못하는 새 왕이 강제 노역으로 억압하고, 히브리 남자 아기를 죽이라고 명령하는 장이다. 산파들은 하나님을 두려워하여 이 명령을 따르지 않는다.

이집트에 간 히브리 사람들이 억압을 받다
1야곱을 따라 가족을 데리고 이집트로 내려간 이스라엘의 아들들의 이름은 다음과 같다. Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.
5야곱의 혈통에서 태어난 사람은 칠십 명이 되었는데, 그 중에서 요셉은 이미 이집트에 내려가 있었다. And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already .
6얼마 뒤에 요셉이 죽고 그의 동기들과 그 시대 사람들도 다 죽었으나 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
7이스라엘 백성은 자식을 많이 낳고 번성하여 온 땅에 가득 찰 만큼 무섭게 불어났다. And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
9자기 백성에게 이렇게 일렀다. "보아라, 이스라엘 백성이 이렇듯 무섭게 불어나니 큰일이다. And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:
10그들이 더 불어나지 못하게 기회를 보아 손을 써야겠다. 전쟁이라도 일어나면 원수의 편에 붙어 우리를 치고 나라를 빼앗을지도 모른다." Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
11그리하여 그들은 공사 감독들을 두어 이스라엘 백성에게 강제 노동을 시켜 파라오의 곡식을 저장해 둘 도성 비돔과 라므세스를 세웠다. Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.
12그러나 이렇게 억압을 받으면 받을수록 이스라엘 백성은 더욱 불어났다. 이집트인들은 그들을 두려워한 나머지 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
14그들은 흙을 이겨 벽돌을 만드는 일과 밭일 등 온갖 고된 일을 시키면서 이스라엘 백성을 괴롭혔다. And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.
15한편 이집트 왕은 히브리 산파-한 사람은 시브라였고 또 한 사람은 부아였다-들에게 명령을 내렸다. And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:
16"히브리 여인이 해산하는 것을 도와줄 때에, 사타구니를 보고 아들이거든 죽여버리고 딸이거든 살려두어라." And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
17그러나 산파들은 하느님을 두려워하여 이집트 왕이 하라는 대로 하지 않고 사내아이들을 살려주었다. But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.
18이집트 왕이 산파들을 불러들여 "사내아이들을 살려두다니, 어찌하여 이런 짓을 하였느냐?" 하고 꾸짖었다. And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?
19산파들이 파라오에게 대답하였다. "히브리 여인들은 이집트 여인과는 달리 기운이 좋아 산파가 가기 전에 아기를 낳아버립니다." And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.
20하느님께서 산파들을 잘 돌보아 주셨다. 이스라엘 백성은 날로 무섭게 불어났다. Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
21산파들이 하느님을 두려워하는 것을 보시고 하느님께서는 그들의 후손을 일으켜주셨다. And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
