¹예수 그리스도의 종이며 사도인 시몬 베드로는 하나님 곧 우리의 구원자 예수 그리스도의 의를 통해 우리와 더불어 동일하게 보배로운 믿음을 얻은 자들에게 편지하노니 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

²하나님과 예수 우리 주를 아는 것을 통해 은혜와 평강이 너희에게 더욱 많이 있기를 원하노라. Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

³우리를 부르사 영광과 덕에 이르게 하신 분을 아는 것을 통해 그분의 신성한 권능이 생명과 하나님의 성품에 속한 모든 것을 우리에게 주셨도다. According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

⁴그것들로 말미암아 지극히 크고 보배로운 약속들이 우리에게 주어졌나니 이것은 너희가 이 약속들을 힘입어 정욕으로 인해 세상에 있게 된 썩을 것을 피하여 하나님의 본성에 참여하는 자가 되게 하려 함이니라. Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

⁵이것과 더불어 열심을 다하여 너희의 믿음에 덕을, 덕에 지식을, 해설 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

⁶지식에 절제를, 절제에 인내를, 인내에 경건을, And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

⁷경건에 형제의 친절을, 형제의 친절에 사랑을 더하라. And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

⁸이것들이 너희 안에 있어 풍성하면 그것들이 너희가 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 아는 것에서 빈약하거나 열매를 맺지 못하는 자가 되지 아니하게 하려니와 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁹이것들이 없는 자는 눈먼 자요 멀리 볼 수 없는 자며 자기의 옛 죄들에서 자기가 깨끗하게 된 것을 잊은 자니라. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

¹⁰그러므로 형제들아, 더욱 열심을 내어 너희를 부르신 것과 선택하신 것을 확고히 하라. 너희가 이것들을 행하면 결코 넘어지지 아니하리니 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

¹¹이렇게 우리 주 곧 구원자 예수 그리스도의 영존하는 왕국에 들어감을 주께서 너희에게 풍성히 베푸시리라. For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

¹²그러므로 비록 너희가 이것들을 알고 현재의 진리에 굳게 서 있을지라도 너희가 항상 그것들을 기억하게 하는 일에 내가 게으르지 아니하리라. Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them , and be established in the present truth.

¹³참으로 내가 이 장막에 있는 동안에 너희가 기억하게 하여 너희를 일깨우는 것이 합당한 줄로 생각하노니 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

¹⁴이는 우리 주 예수 그리스도께서 내게 보여 주신 것 같이 내가 머잖아 반드시 나의 이 장막을 벗어야 할 줄 알기 때문이라. Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.

¹⁵또한 내가 떠나간 뒤에도 너희가 항상 이것들을 기억할 수 있도록 내가 애쓰리라. Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

¹⁶우리가 너희에게 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 권능과 오심을 알려 줄 때에 교묘히 꾸며 낸 이야기들을 따르지 아니하였으며 우리는 그분의 위엄을 눈으로 본 자들이니라. For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

¹⁷뛰어난 영광으로부터 이러한 음성이 그분께 나서 이르기를, 이 사람은 내 사랑하는 아들이라. 내가 그를 매우 기뻐하노라, 하실 때에 그분께서 하나님 아버지로부터 존귀와 영광을 받으셨느니라. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

¹⁸하늘로부터 나온 이 음성은 우리가 그분과 함께 거룩한 산에 있을 때에 들은 것이니라. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

¹⁹또한 우리에게는 더 확실한 대언의 말씀이 있으니 날이 새어 샛별이 너희 마음속에 떠오를 때까지 너희가 어두운 곳에서 비치는 빛을 대하듯 이 말씀에 주의를 기울이는 것이 잘하는 것이니라. 해설 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

²⁰먼저 이것을 알라. 성경 기록의 대언은 결코 어떤 사적인 해석에서 나지 아니하였나니 해설 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

²¹대언은 옛적에 사람의 뜻으로 말미암아 나오지 아니하였고 오직 하나님의 거룩한 사람들은 성령님께서 자기들을 움직이시는 대로 말하였느니라. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
