출애굽기 1장은 애굽에서 크게 번성한 이스라엘 자손을 요셉을 알지 못하는 새 왕이 강제 노역으로 억압하고, 히브리 남자 아기를 죽이라고 명령하는 장이다. 산파들은 하나님을 두려워하여 이 명령을 따르지 않는다.

이스라엘 사람들이 이집트에서 강해지다

1이름들은 이러하다. 야곱과 함께 저마다 집안사람들을 데리고 이집트에 온 이스라엘 아들들의 이름들은 이러하다. Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.
2르우벤, 시므온, 레위, 유다, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
3잇사갈, 스불론, 베냐민, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4단, 납달리, 갓, 아셀이다. Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
5그때 야곱의 몸에서 난 아들은 모두 70명이었다. 요셉은 이미 이집트에 있었다. And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already .
6그러다가 요셉이 죽었다. 그의 형제들과 그 세대의 사람은 모두 죽었다. And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
7그렇지만 이스라엘 사람들은 번성하여 큰 무리를 이루었다. 그들은 불어나 아주 강해졌다. 이집트 땅이 그들로 가득 찼다. And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

이집트 사람들이 이스라엘 백성을 괴롭히다

8이집트에 새 임금이 들어섰는데, 그는 요셉을 알지 못했다. Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.
9새 임금이 이집트 백성에게 말했다. “여기, 이스라엘 백성이 늘어나 우리보다 강하구나. And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:
10자, 이들을 슬기롭게 다루자. 그렇지 않으면 이들이 더 늘어날 것이다. 전쟁이 터지면, 적 편에 붙어 우리와 맞서 싸우다가 이 땅을 떠날 것이다.” Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
11그래서 이집트 사람들은 감독관들을 두어 이스라엘 백성을 힘든 일로 괴롭혔다. 파라오의 창고 도시인 비돔과 라메세스를 세우게 한 것이다. Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.
12그러나 괴롭힐수록 이스라엘 백성은 더 많아져서 퍼져 나갔다. 그래서 이집트 사람들은 이스라엘 사람들 앞에서 무서움을 느꼈다. But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
13이집트 사람들은 이스라엘 사람들에게 일을 시키면서 난폭하게 굴었다. And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:
14진흙을 이기고 벽돌을 빚는 힘든 일과 온갖 밭일로 그들의 삶을 비참하게 만들었다. 온갖 일을 시키며 난폭하게 부린 것이다. And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

출산을 돕는 히브리 여자들이 파라오의 말을 듣지 않다

15이집트 임금이 출산을 돕는 히브리 여자들에게 명령했다. 한 사람의 이름은 시브라이고, 다른 한 사람의 이름은 부아였다. And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:
16임금이 말했다. “히브리 여자들의 아이를 받을 때, 아이가 나오는 것을 보고 있다가 아들이면 죽이고, 딸이면 살려 주어라!” And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
17그러나 출산을 돕는 여자들은 하나님을 두려워하여, 이집트 임금이 명령한 대로 하지 않고, 사내아이들을 살려 주었다. But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.
18이집트 임금이 그 여자들을 불러 물어보았다. “왜 이런 짓을 했느냐? 왜 사내아이들을 살려 주었느냐?” And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?
19그 여자들이 파라오에게 대답했다. “히브리 여자들은 이집트 여자들과 다릅니다. 힘이 좋아서 우리가 가기 전에 아이를 낳습니다.” And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.
20출산을 돕는 그 여자들을 하나님이 잘 돌보아 주셔서, 이스라엘 백성이 더 불어나 아주 강해졌다. Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
21그 여자들이 하나님을 두려워했기 때문에, 하나님이 그들에게 가정을 이루게 해 주셨다. And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
22파라오가 그의 온 백성에게 명령했다. “태어난 것이 아들이면 모조리 나일강에 던지고, 딸이면 모두 살려 주어라.” And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
