베드로전서 1장은 편지의 첫 장이다. 흩어진 나그네 된 신자들에게 인사한 뒤, 부활로 얻은 산 소망과 시련 속의 기쁨을 말하고, 그리스도의 피로 구속된 사람답게 거룩하게 살며 서로 사랑하라고 권한다.

¹예수 그리스도의 사도 베드로는 본도와 갈라디아와 갑바도기아와 아시아와 비두니아에 두루 흩어진 나그네들 해설 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

²곧 하나님 아버지의 미리 아심에 따라 성령의 거룩히 구별하심을 통해 순종함과 예수 그리스도의 피 뿌림에 이르도록 선택 받은 자들에게 편지하노니 은혜와 평강이 너희에게 더욱 많이 있기를 원하노라. Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

³하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지를 찬송하리로다. 그분께서 자신의 풍성하신 긍휼에 따라 죽은 자들로부터 예수 그리스도를 부활하게 하심으로 우리를 다시 낳으사 산 소망에 이르게 하셨으며 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

⁴썩지 않고 더럽지 않으며 사라지지 아니하고 너희를 위해 하늘에 마련된 상속 유업을 받게 하셨나니 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

⁵너희는 마지막 때에 드러내려고 예비된 구원에 이르도록 믿음을 통해 하나님의 권능으로 보호받고 있느니라. Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

⁶비록 지금은 필요가 있어 너희가 여러 가지 시험으로 인해 잠시 근심하고 있지만 그 구원을 크게 기뻐하나니 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

⁷이것은 너희 믿음의 단련이 불로 단련해도 없어지는 금을 단련하는 것보다 훨씬 더 귀하여 예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때에 칭찬과 존귀와 영광으로 드러나게 하려 함이니라. That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

⁸너희가 그분을 보지 못하였으나 사랑하는도다. 지금도 너희가 그분을 보지 못하나 믿으며 이루 말할 수 없고 영광이 가득한 기쁨으로 기뻐하나니 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

⁹이는 너희가 너희 믿음의 결말 곧 너희 혼의 구원을 받았기 때문이라. Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

¹⁰이 혼의 구원에 관하여는 너희에게 임할 은혜에 대하여 대언한 대언자들이 부지런히 조사하고 탐구하되 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:

¹¹자기들 안에 계신 그리스도의 영께서 그리스도의 고난과 그 뒤에 있을 영광을 미리 증언해 주실 때에 그 영께서 무엇을 혹은 어느 때를 표적으로 보여 주셨는지 탐구하였느니라. Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

¹²그들이 자기들을 위해 그것들을 수행하지 아니하고 우리를 위해 수행하였음이 그들에게 계시되었는데 그것들은 곧 복음을 선포한 자들이 하늘에서 보내신 성령님과 더불어 이제 너희에게 전한 것이요 천사들도 살펴보기를 갈망하는 것이니라. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

¹³그러므로 너희 마음의 허리를 동이고 정신을 차려 예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때에 너희에게 가져오실 그 은혜로 인해 끝까지 소망을 가질지어다. Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

¹⁴너희는 순종하는 자녀로서 전에 알지 못하던 때의 이전 정욕들에 따라 너희 자신을 꾸미지 말고 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

¹⁵오직 너희를 부르신 분께서 거룩하신 것 같이 너희도 온갖 종류의 행실에서 거룩할지니라. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

¹⁶기록된바, 내가 거룩하니 너희도 거룩하라, 하셨느니라. Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

¹⁷사람들의 외모를 중시하지 아니하시고 각 사람의 행위대로 심판하시는 아버지를 너희가 부르며 간구할진대 너희가 여기에 잠시 머물러 있을 동안을 두려움 가운데 지내라. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

¹⁸너희가 알거니와 너희 조상들로부터 전통으로 물려받은 너희의 헛된 행실에서 너희가 구속받은 것은 은이나 금같이 썩을 것들로 된 것이 아니요, 해설 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;

¹⁹오직 흠도 없고 점도 없는 어린양의 피 같은 그리스도의 보배로운 피로 된 것이니라. But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

²⁰참으로 그분께서는 세상의 창건 이전에 미리 정하여졌으되 이 마지막 때에 너희를 위해 드러나셨으며 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

²¹너희는 그분으로 말미암아 그분을 죽은 자들로부터 일으키시고 그분에게 영광을 주신 하나님을 믿으니 이것은 너희의 믿음과 소망이 하나님 안에 있게 하려 함이니라. Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

²²너희가 성령을 통해 진리에 순종함으로 너희 혼을 깨끗하게 하여 거짓 없이 형제들을 사랑하기에 이르렀으니 순수한 마음으로 뜨겁게 서로 사랑하라. Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

²³너희가 다시 태어난 것은 썩을 씨에서 난 것이 아니요 썩지 아니할 씨에서 난 것이니 살아 있고 영원히 거하는 하나님의 말씀으로 된 것이니라. 해설 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

²⁴모든 육체는 풀과 같고 사람의 모든 영광은 풀의 꽃과 같으니라. 풀은 마르고 그것의 꽃은 떨어지되 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:

²⁵오직 주의 말씀은 영원토록 지속되나니 복음으로 너희에게 선포된 말씀이 이 말씀이니라. But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
