욥기 19장은 빌닷의 두 번째 발언에 대한 욥의 대답이다. 욥은 친구들과 하나님에게 버림받은 고통을 호소하면서도 "나의 구속자가 살아 계시니"라는 고백으로 자신이 결국 하나님을 보게 되리라는 소망을 말한다.

욥의 대답

1욥이 대답하여 이르되 Then Job answered and said,
2너희가 내 마음을 괴롭히며 말로 나를 짓부수기를 어느 때까지 하겠느냐 How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?
3너희가 열 번이나 나를 학대하고도 부끄러워 아니하는구나 These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not ashamed that ye make yourselves strange to me.
4비록 내게 허물이 있다 할지라도 그 허물이 내게만 있느냐 And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remaineth with myself.
5너희가 참으로 나를 향하여 자만하며 내게 수치스러운 행위가 있다고 증언하려면 하려니와 If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach:
6하나님이 나를 억울하게 하시고 자기 그물로 나를 에워싸신 줄을 알아야 할지니라 Know now that God hath overthrown me, and hath compassed me with his net.
7내가 폭행을 당한다고 부르짖으나 응답이 없고 도움을 간구하였으나 정의가 없구나 Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment.
8그가 내 길을 막아 지나가지 못하게 하시고 내 앞길에 어둠을 두셨으며 He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths.
9나의 영광을 거두어가시며 나의 관모를 머리에서 벗기시고 He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.
10사면으로 나를 헐으시니 나는 죽었구나 내 희망을 나무 뽑듯 뽑으시고 He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and mine hope hath he removed like a tree.
11나를 향하여 진노하시고 원수 같이 보시는구나 He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me unto him as one of his enemies.
12그 군대가 일제히 나아와서 길을 돋우고 나를 치며 내 장막을 둘러 진을 쳤구나 His troops come together, and raise up their way against me, and encamp round about my tabernacle.
13나의 형제들이 나를 멀리 떠나게 하시니 나를 아는 모든 사람이 내게 낯선 사람이 되었구나 He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are verily estranged from me.
14내 친척은 나를 버렸으며 가까운 친지들은 나를 잊었구나 My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.
15내 집에 머물러 사는 자와 내 여종들은 나를 낯선 사람으로 여기니 내가 그들 앞에서 타국 사람이 되었구나 They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight.
16내가 내 종을 불러도 대답하지 아니하니 내 입으로 그에게 간청하여야 하겠구나 I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth.
17내 아내도 내 숨결을 싫어하며 내 허리의 자식들도 나를 가련하게 여기는구나 My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children’s sake of mine own body.
18어린 아이들까지도 나를 업신여기고 내가 일어나면 나를 조롱하는구나 Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they spake against me.
19나의 가까운 친구들이 나를 미워하며 내가 사랑하는 사람들이 돌이켜 나의 원수가 되었구나 All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.
20내 피부와 살이 뼈에 붙었고 남은 것은 겨우 잇몸 뿐이로구나 My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.
21나의 친구야 너희는 나를 불쌍히 여겨다오 나를 불쌍히 여겨다오 하나님의 손이 나를 치셨구나 Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.
22너희가 어찌하여 하나님처럼 나를 박해하느냐 내 살로도 부족하냐 Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
23나의 말이 곧 기록되었으면, 책에 씌어졌으면, Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book!
24철필과 납으로 영원히 돌에 새겨졌으면 좋겠노라 That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!
25내가 알기에는 나의 대속자가 살아 계시니 마침내 그가 땅 위에 서실 것이라 해설 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
26내 가죽이 벗김을 당한 뒤에도 내가 육체 밖에서 하나님을 보리라 And though after my skin worms destroy this body , yet in my flesh shall I see God:
27내가 그를 보리니 내 눈으로 그를 보기를 낯선 사람처럼 하지 않을 것이라 내 마음이 초조하구나 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
28너희가 만일 이르기를 우리가 그를 어떻게 칠까 하며 또 이르기를 일의 뿌리가 그에게 있다 할진대 But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?
29너희는 칼을 두려워 할지니라 분노는 칼의 형벌을 부르나니 너희가 심판장이 있는 줄을 알게 되리라 Be ye afraid of the sword: for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment.
